Dr. Missy Johnson demonstrates the faith and courage one needs to go through the painful and dangerous battle of breast cancer and to thrive after cancer. Johnson was diagnosed with Stage 3c breast cancer. During Dr. Missy’s battle with cancer, her sister was also diagnosed with the same. Unfortunately, her sister did not survive.
Even in the midst of the physical and spiritual war, Dr. Missy decided that giving up was not an option. Dr. Missy shows women you can thrive and not just survive such a trial, through prayer, by supporting others, coaching others to reach your potential, and sharing her story. She wrote a short movie called “The Party” about a woman whose breast cancer returns just as she was planning a party to celebrate her 5th year in remission. “The Party” aired on BET HER on October 9 th as a part of “The Waiting Room Series.
Hope the short movie repeats as it will encourage and bless someone who is going through and lets them know that there is hope and there can be victory through and after the storm.
As we take heed of Breast Cancer Awareness Month I encourage you to exercise self-care and schedule timely checkups. Don’t allow fear and procrastination to stop you.
My mother is a breast cancer survivor. Now 93 years old she found the lump in her breast and had a radical mastectomy at age 48 years young. I celebrate my dear friend Cheryl who has battled this disease but is coming out thriving.
I have lost four (4) cousins( Sandra 42, Pamela, Denise, and Barbara) to this vicious disease. One this year and my dear cousin Pamela last June.-
I encourage you to be a support to someone, pray for them, and again see to your health.
Support
Be a source of support for someone going through this vicious illness or any disease. As the Waiting Room Series and the “The Party” reveal, a woman needs a sister, relative, or friend to be a source of support, to attend treatment, to talk to, and to be there when she calls for help. We need each other and while God is the source of our strength, He wants us to be ambassadors to one another. The strong help bear the burdens of those suffering, grieving, and hurt if possible.
Pray

Self-care
Self-care is important. Begin to write a Personal Health Plan for yourself. Assess your health and write goals for yourself that are practical. Review your general health based on what you have observed about yourself or what the doctor has told you. They should be realistic to fit you and your lifestyle. Include the improvement of your diet, the need for exercise, and mental and spiritual healing needs. Answer the questions: What is the best plan for me? How do I carry out this plan? How often? How much? Make a timeline for the implementation of your plan. Pray and ask the Lord to guide you.
Ask God to give you wisdom and strength to take action to improve your health. Now make doctor appointments, set an exercise schedule, and improve the kind of foods you eat.

Great story, I really enjoyed reading it. I am a 7 year breast cancer survivor and I believe it is vitally important that we share our story particularly as black women. Our story gives others the courage to fight. Praise God that your mom is 93 years young!
Thank you Winona.Yes we must continue to pray, encourage one another to take the exam and support them as they go through. Our story must be shared.
